Cricket Australia has been put on blast for refusing to accept sponsorship from energy company, Alinta Energy, while still taking money from gambling company Bet365.

Nationals senator Matt Canavan slammed the sporting organisation on claiming Cricket Australia were ‘hypocrites’ for continuing their partnership with Bet365.

It came after cricket captain Pat Cummins voiced his concerns about Atlinta Energy to the governing body’s CEO Nick Hockley and said he would not appear in any promotional material for one of Australia’s biggest carbon emitters.

Alinta Energy received a dismal 2 out of 5 stars in this year’s Green Electricity Guide, due to their plan to burn coal to 2047, the local environmental harm they cause and their ranking as Australia’s 7th biggest polluter.

Cricket Australia announced they were ending their partnership with Atlinta Energy but denied claims the decision was made because of Cummins’ opposition to having the energy company as a sponsor.

Canavan shared an image to Twitter on Wednesday of a webpage on the Cricket Australia website that outlined their partnership with gambling company, Bet365.

‘It is a funny world,’ Canavan wrote in his post.

‘Company that provides reliable energy for millions: shunned. Company that makes money off people’s gambling addictions: welcome on board!’

Bet365 have sponsored Cricket Australia since the gambling company launched in 2012.

It is one of the most popular sport betting websites in Australia and made a whopping $14.3million before tax in the 12 months preceding March of this year.

The politician accused Cummins of being selectively ethical by ending sponsorship with the large Australian power company and working with Chinese PV manufacturing giant LONGi for his Cricket to Climate program back in February.

‘If Pat Cummins wants to turn cricket into the morality police, I would have thought that the human rights abuses of the Chinese Communist Party might deserve more attention than a power company that helps keep the lights on for his T20 games,’ Mr Canavan said.

Canavan’s outrage comes despite the fact his party, The Nationals, have received large sums of money in the past from gambling agencies, with Tabcorp and Crown Resorts being major donors.

The Nationals have also accepted money from tobacco and energy companies including Alinta Energy.

Cricket Australia announced its four-year deal with Alinta will only be renewed for one more season.

‘I think the most obvious, front-of-mind things you can see is who we partner with.So I hope that when we think of who we want to align with, who we want to invite into being part of cricket, I hope climate is a real priority,’ Cummins said.

‘I’ve got my own personal views so when it comes to personal sponsorships there are some companies I wouldn’t want to align with.’

‘When we’re getting money, whether it’s programs for junior cricket, grassroots, things for fans around Australia, I feel a real responsibility that with that, we’re doing on balance what is the right thing.’
